Thomas and Chara win awards

Tonight was NHL award night and Bruins Tim Thomas and Zdeno Chara both won some nice hardware. Tim Thomas won the 2010-2011 Venzina Trophy, which is awarded to the goaltender adjudged to be the best at his position. Thomas beat out Canucks Roberto Luongo and Predators Pekka Rinne.

Bruins captain Zdeno Chara did not win the Norris Trophy for best defenseman as that award was awarded to Red Wings Nicklas Lidstrom. Lidstrom beat out Bruins Zdeno Chara and Predators Shea Weber. Lidstrom played in every game this season (82) and finished the season with 16 goals and 46 assists for 62 points, was -2, had 49 hits, 92 blocked shots, and 175 shots. When was the last time a Norris Trophy winner a minus player? Chara played in 81 games and finished the season with 14 goals and 30 assists for 44 points, was +33, had 153 hits, 111 blocked shots, and 264 shots. Weber played in every game this season (82) and finished the season with 16 goals and 32 assists for 48 points, was +7, had 211 hits, 113 blocked shots, and 254 shots. The best overall defenseman (counting offensively and defensively) was Weber not Lidstrom. Sure Lidstrom had the most points out of the three, but I'm not sure how you win best defenseman and have a minus rating. If I had to pick one of these three defensemen for my team, going by this past seasons stats only, I would be picking either Chara or Weber, not Lidstrom. Lidstrom now has 7 Norris trophies during his career and is one behind the greatest of all-time Bobby Orr.

Despite not winning the Norris Trophy, Chara was awarded the Mark Messier Leadership Award. The Messier Award is an annual award that recognizes an individual as a superior leader within their sport, and as a contributing member of society. The award is given to a player selected by Mark Messier to honor an individual who leads by positive example through on-ice performance, motivation of team members and a dedication to community activities and charitable causes.
