Bruins trade for Joe Corvo

After Tomas Kaberle signed with the Carolina Hurricanes (3-years $12.75 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes), the Bruins announced that they acquired defenseman Joe Corvo from the Carolina Hurricanes for a fourth round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Corvo's cap hit is $2,250,000 next season.

Corvo is 34 years old with one year left on his current contract. He is more of an offensive-minded defenseman that can definitely play on the power-play but he is not a good defensive player. He has been a minus player in the last three seasons which is not good (-14 in 2010-11 with Carolina, -10 in 2009-10 with Carolina and Washington, and -1 in 2008-09 with Carolina).

Corvo appeared in all 82 games for the Hurricanes last season and tied career highs in points (40) and assists (29) to go along with 11 goals. He is a veteran of 568 career NHL games split between the Canes, Washington Capitals, Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings. In those 568 games, the 34-year-old native of Oak Park, IL has 79 goals and 179 assists for 258 points.

Corvo has also skated in 45 postseason games in his NHL career with 5-13=18 totals. He played in 20 games for the Ottawa Senators during their run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2007, where he was a teammate of current Bruin Chris Kelly.

The 6'1", 210-pound defenseman was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round (83rd overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
