Happy 4th of July everyone! It may not be a very happy one for Tyler Seguin and fans of his though, as Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has traded Seguin to the Dallas Stars in a seven-player trade. The Bruins traded forwards Tyler Seguin, Rich Peverley and defenseman Ryan Button to the Dallas Stars for forwards Loui Eriksson, Matt Fraser, Reilly Smith and defenseman Joe Morrow.

With this trade, the Bruins get some cap relief as Seguin was going to be in the first year of his 6-year $34.5 million contract extension and the Bruins will save $3.25 million with Peverley gone as well. Eriksson has three years left on his contract at $4.25 million per season. Look at CapGeek.com for the salary numbers.

I think Eriksson will be perfect to fill in the hole that Nathan Horton will be leaving on the Krejci-Lucic line as he can play both left and right wing, he can shoot the puck well and is a good two-way player. Eriksson is 27 years old, 6'2" 196lbs, shoots left, is from Sweden and his career-high in goals is 36 in 82 games back in the 2008-2009 season. Eriksson had 12 goals and 17 assists last season in 48 games on a bad Dallas Stars team.

Welcome to Boston
Matt Fraser is a right winger, 23 years old, 6'1" 204lbs and shoots left. He has played in 13 career NHL games and recorded 1 goal and 3 points. Smith is a right winger, 22 years old, 6'0" 185lbs and shoots left. He has played in 40 career NHL games and recorded 3 goals and 9 points. Morrow is a defenseman, 20 years old, was a 1st round draft pick by the Penguins in 2011, 6'1" 204lbs and shoots left. He has not played in any NHL games yet.

Could the Twitterverse have gotten Seguin traded?
Do you remember the comments that Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli had about Tyler Seguin when all of the trade talk came up before the NHL Entry Draft? Well during a conference call about this Bruins-Stars trade, apparently Chiarelli stated that he saw all kinds of things on Twitter about Seguin's "extra-curricular stuff" but he tried to make it seem that that wasn't why Seguin was traded. Read Chiarelli's comments below from BostonHerald.com.
Chiarelli touched several times on the speculation that the B's decision to say goodbye to the 21-year-old Seguin was a response not just to his sub-par play, but also his proclivity for enjoying Boston's nighlife.

The GM did concede: "It's not strictly an on-ice decision."

But he repeatedly defended Seguin, calling him, "a good kid and a terrific player" and "a tremendous package of speed and skill."

...

"There was there was an opportunity to get a very good player, get some good prospects and to lower your cap," said Chiareli. "And then maybe to improve in the next market (free agency) starting tomorrow."

Chiarelli spoke at length about Seguin's reputed off-ice misbehavior. It was generally assumed that when the GM recently expressed concerns about the player's professionalism and focus, that's what he was talking about. But he insisted it was only small things about his preparation for games.

"I see the Twitterverse, whatever it's called, and all of these reports about his extra-curricular stuff," said the GM. "What has to be remembered in all of this is that he's 21 year old. He's a good kid and a terrific player. He liked to have fun like the rest of us. I don't really think it's that big a deal. When I said focus it was about little things, preparing to play. It was nothing about extra-curricluar activities."

*Update
Seguin partied a lot during Bruins-Leafs series?
Joe Haggerty of csnne.com has some info about Seguin and some things he pulled during the season and playoffs.
According to sources around the team, Seguin was out late in Toronto during the road trip to play the Leafs in the first round of the playoffs and the team had to hold a sit-down with the immature forward about his commitment to the team. Seguin showed up each day at the Air Canada Centre wearing the same clothes for three straight days and played badly in Games 3 and 4 of the first round against Toronto.

That incident coupled with stories of Seguin’s late night partying during the regular season prompted Peter Chiarelli to say that “[Seguin] needs to become more of a professional” during a tirade at draft weekend.
