Bruins acquire Horton and Campbell from Panthers

Today it was announced that the Bruins have acquired forwards Nathan Horton and Gregory Campbell from the Florida Panthers for defenseman Dennis Wideman, the Bruins own first round pick in 2010 (15th overall), and the Bruins own third round pick in 2011.

The 25-year-old Horton is a veteran of 422 regular season games and has recorded 142 goals and 153 assists for 295 points in his career. He has tallied 20 or more goals in his last five NHL seasons, including a career high 31 in 2006-07. His career best for points in a single season is 62, which he tallied in back-to-back years in both 06-07 (31-31=62) and 07-08 (27-35=62). Last year, Horton registered 20-37=57 totals in 65 games for Florida. The 6'2", 229-pound native of Welland, Ontario was originally drafted by the Panthers in the first round (3rd overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

The 26-year-old Campbell skated in 60 games for Florida last season and registered 2-15=17 totals. He has skated in 363 games in his NHL career with 29-56=85 totals and 312 penalty minutes. The 6'0, 199-pound native of London Ontario was originally drafted by the Panthers in the third round (67th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

I like this move by the Bruins. They need a winger who can score and they now got one in Horton. I'm looking for his goal numbers to improve if he plays on the same line with Marc Savard. Imagine if Savard played with Horton and Lucic, that may be one of the bigger (in size) scoring lines out there. Campbell brings grit and will be a good third or fourth liner. He's a restricted free agent right now so we'll see if the Bruins sign him or not. Remember Gregory Campbell is the son of Colin Campbell, the one who didn't suspend Matt Cooke last season. Stanley Cup of Chowder pointed out that this doesn't really effect the cap as "from a salary cap standpoint, the deal is a wash. The Bruins moved Dennis Wideman's $4 million contract ($3.85 million cap hit) and the Panthers moved Horton $4 million contract." (Source)
