Report: Marc Savard done for season

Joe McDonald of ESPNBoston.com is reporting that Bruins center Marc Savard will be shut down for the rest of the 2010-11 NHL season because of the latest concussion he received, courtesy of ex-Bruin Matt Hunwick (and possibly the hit he took from Deryk Engelland).

Boston Bruins center Marc Savard will be shut down for the remainder of the 2010-11 season because of ongoing problems with concussions, according to a team source. An official announcement is expected from the team on Monday.

General manager Peter Chiarelli declined to comment on Savard's status on Sunday, but early last week Chiarelli admitted to ESPNBoston.com that there was a "strong possibility" Savard's season was over.

Earlier Sunday, at the conclusion of the Bruins' practice, coach Claude Julien said there was no update on Savard.

Savard, along with his agent, Larry Kelly, met with Chiarelli this weekend after undergoing further tests.

Savard is expected to be placed on long-term injured reserve, which would clear cap room in order for Chiarelli to acquire another impact player via trade if the GM believes the team needs it.

"With the time between concussions, and with the severity of the concussion [last March], and the time between when he basically stopped having concussion symptoms, [shutting him down] is certainly something you would have to consider," Chiarelli said last week.

I want to wish Marc Savard all the best and a full recovery. Your life comes first before hockey so I hope you take all the time you need to recover.
