Bruins sign Johnny Boychuk to 3-year extension

Today it was announced that the Bruins have re-signed defenseman Johnny Boychuk to a 3-year contract extension.

Boychuk will make $3.1 million, $3.4 million and $3.6 million over the next three years and he also gets a limited no-trade clause.

So far this season, the 28-year-old Boychuk has played in 52 games with three goals and seven assists for 10 points. As of February 14th, he ranks second among B’s defensemen in plus/minus with a +23 on the season, trailing only Zdeno Chara. The +23 ranks eighth overall amongst skaters in the NHL.

For his career, Boychuk has played in 177 regular season NHL games with Boston and Colorado and has 41 points on 11 goals and 30 assists. He was originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the third round (61st overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Boychuk was acquired by Boston from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Matt Hendricks on June 24, 2008.

Peter Chiarelli comments about the Boychuk signing:
"Johnny really wanted to stay here and that's the over-riding theme," Chiarelli said. "He's obviously been a good performer for us. He's a big, strong and physical [defenseman].

"He's a Bruin-type of player. He's physical, yet he can score with his shot. He's a punishing player. He chose not to test the market, which was nice for us."

"I would think if Johnny went to the market he could have gotten more," Chiarelli said. "The grass isn't always greener."
